rachel pursueD her DREAM JOB, AND WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR DONORS,
IS NOW ASSISTANT DEAN OF STUDIES
"Katuuso came as a gift to me. Deep in the village, I could not even begin to think about being a teacher, but then Dave and Annabelle came and opened this school and it was the chance that I got. It changed my life."
In 2010, Rachel began work as a cleaner at our first school, Katuuso Primary and Vocational School in rural Uganda.
She was diligent and timely, and went beyond her role every day. When our staff noticed, they asked her what she was working so hard for. "I work hard to save money, because I want to go to university. One day, I am going to be a teacher too."
When a particular donor heard about Rachel's story, and her dedication, she was sponsored and moved to Uganda's capital, Kampala, and fulfil her dream of going to university. Rachel graduated in 2013, and has been a Pre-Primary teacher at Katuuso ever since!
Rachel is one of our best and most passionate teachers due to her strong leadership, attention to detail and care for the welfare of the children.
As reward for her effort and dedication, Rachel was promoted to Assistant Dean of Studies in 2015, and is now training and assisting other teachers in their quest to improve and guide our students.
Our Dean of Studies, Janepher has been there for Rachel's entire journey and had this to say. "Rachel was a community member who had really given up on going back to school and having a good job, such were the barriers to her goal. With a little help, Rachel is now a proud teacher, with a bright future to look forward to."
It is a sad fact that in Uganda, only 50% of teachers turn up to work on any given day, due to low pay and poor conditions. Whilst Uganda has universal free schooling for all primary students, the cost of uniforms, meals, books and resources prevents many from enrolling, and in our district, less than 50% complete primary school.
Our goal is to ensure as many children as possible receive a quality education, from great teachers, in a happy and healthy environment.
In 2010, Rachel began as a cleaner at Katuuso Primary and Vocational School. She was working to save money to study to be a teacher at University. Thanks to Barrie and Simone Goldsmith, her dream of studying came true and she is now fully qualified.
