Our Ugandan staff are the lifeblood of our community. The Cooks, Agricultural staff and Tailors earn a living and support their family either working at the school directly, or in one of the small businesses we have built in the community.

'MAMA FlAVIAH'S STORY

KATUUSO PRIMARY AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOL - HEAD CHEF

Flavia Nassaazi started working at Katuuso Primary and Vocational School at its inception in 2011. She is fifty years old; the mother of three and grandmother of five. Every morning at 5:30am, she can be found over a gigantic pot of boiling beans and sweet porridge, as she supervises the cooking staff in preparing three meals per day for 350 students and staff.

Prior to cooking at the school, she and her husband were subsistence farmers. They worked tirelessly for small yields and minimal income to support their family. She truly loves preparing food for the children and is proud to serve guests when they come to the school. Flaviah's cooking job not only enables her to pay school fees for her children, but she has also invested in a local barber shop business. She is now passing her cooking skills onto her eldest son Frank, who has also joined the school's cooking staff. Flaviah and her husband attend teh adult literacy classes offered weekly at the school; her English and reading have improved immensely, as well as her confidence.

Flaviah's caring and maternal nature is readily apparent to anyone in her presence; she cheerfully offers assistance whenever it is needed and her duties often go beyond the description of a cook. "That's why we call her 'Mama Flaviah,'' says Head Teacher Robert, "she does the job of a mother for everyone at the school!"
